The Truth About Laser Treatment for Psoriasis

Many people are using laser treatments for psoriasis to combat their condition. Whether you have been battling psoriasis for many years, or you have only recently been diagnosed with this skin condition, there are many different types of treatments for psoriasis at your disposal and laser treatments are becoming very popular.

Psoriasis is a skin condition that cannot be cured completely with medication, but there are many more treatment options today that can put even the toughest cases of psoriasis into remission such as laser treatment for psoriasis.

The premise behind using laser treatments for your condition has a great deal to do with the research which has been done over the past few years in conjunction with UVB light therapy. What researchers and scientists have learned is that this therapy is successful, but it can be taken to the next level with the use of excimer, also known as laser light therapy.

Let’s just go into a brief description about ultraviolet light before we move on into a more in depth explanation about laser treatment for psoriasis. As you likely already know, UVB light is a natural light wavelength that we experience through the sun. This type of light has been harnessed through artificial lamps and when applied to the skin it is called light therapy. The problem with this type of psoriasis treatment is that it cannot be as targeted towards specific problem areas as a laser has the capability of doing.

Laser treatment or excimer laser therapy for psoriasis takes this UVB light and utilizes it in a very strategic and targeted manner. Gases are used to take this ultraviolet light and turn it into a direct laser beam, with the capabilities of targeting even the smallest, yet toughest areas of psoriasis.

This laser light will transfer energy into your skin cells when it is targeted, and this energy will actually help slow down the abnormally fast growth of the skin cells. It is this abnormally fast growth of skin cells that causes psoriasis and if you can find a way to slow down this genetic defect, you have found a way to put your psoriasis into remission and provide yourself with some relief. This is the main reason psoriasis laser treatments show so much promise.

Are Laser Psoriasis Treatments Safe?

As you may have heard, the use of UVB light in light therapy treatments has stirred up a bit of controversy relating to whether or not this form of treatment will increase your risk of skin cancer later in life. Although there is no real proof one way or the other in this aspect, the use of excimer lasers instead of light therapy greatly reduces any risks that may be present.

The excimer laser is incredibly small and targeted. Instead of touching all of your skin, it is only one small area at a time being treated. Also, it is important to note here that because this laser can be so specific within its treatment options, a higher dosage of UVB light can be used in order to get the most out of the treatment without harming the rest of your skin cells unnecessarily.

If you are interested in learning more about laser treatment for psoriasis, speak with your dermatologist today. Generally these treatments are done within your doctor’s office and the frequency can range anywhere from 5-8 sessions per week depending on the severity of your condition. Provide yourself with some relief and ask your doctor about laser treatment for psoriasis.
